YHC has a loose grasp of the events of 1898, but I know we have to be intentional in dealing with the events and demonstrate grace in understanding what happened and how it dictated the future of Wilmington’s race relations and economic growth.
The mission of F3 is to plant grow and serve small workout groups for men and for the invigoration of male community leadership.

Mosey to Althea Gibson (tennis courts). We stopped at the parking lot. The Star News reports that the Daily Record stood about on this location on S 9th St. The Daily Record was a black owned newspaper run by Alexander Manly. On August 18, 1898, he responded to an article posted by Alfred Waddel. Waddell was a respected orator who 20 years prior lost a reelection bid. The democratic party, who at the time was a party of white supremacist, published a guest op-ed piece calling “North Carolina is a WHITE MAN’S STATE and WHITE MEN will rule it, and they will crush the party of Negro domination beneath a majority so overwhelming that no other party will ever dare to attempt to establish negro rule here.”
Waddell and other men drafted a White Declaration of Independence, which among many demands, was that Manly leave town and the Daily Record have its printing press disassembled.
We walked over to the tennis courts, where we did DORA 123
100 Turkish Getups
200 Incline Merkins
Partner runs to the other end of the court and does 5 donkey kicks.
The Q reminds the pax that the tennis courts they are exercising on were the training courts for Althea Gibson, who is the first African American to win Wimbledon and the US Open.
Mosey around the courts to the other side of the playground.
Line up, bear crawl to the fence (approximately 120 yards). At the finish, we remind the men that Martin Luther King Jr was supposed to speak at Williston School (across the street) on the day he was murdered. It is rumored that another shooter was stationed in Wilmington if in the event MLK created enough exposure to become a target.
We split into two groups, separately, each group jail breaks back to the AO.
Mary: various PAX take turns leading Mary.
COT: Jericho mentioned the street marker for the Daily Record is around the corner. Neamiah 2 mentioned the need to have Grace and pray for our country.

A brief overview of the 1898 massacre.
Let’s mosey (south along Water St) – at Market, we talk about one of the first shootings, at the waterfont, in broad daylight.
Mosey up to the Daughters of the Confederacy Bldg. Here, the advertisement for “White men to meet with their weapons to rid the city of the negro problem”.
This is where the mob started, we did 5 burpees. I shared that as we move into the area where the most violence occurred, you’ll see some vacant lots in areas that seem to be thriving economically, are a result of fires and damage done during the race riots of 1898. The route we are taking is the path that created the most deaths as there was a horse drawn wagon with a machine gun. We stopped at several corners, specifically the corner of Redcross and 4th (Mike’s Grill). Black customers were dragged out into the street and shot. Then at Harnett St, where the most gunfire in the whole thing happened.
We did 5 burpees at each stop.
Eventually, we ended up at the 1898 Memorial to reflect. We completed 6s, in honor of the 6 vessels in the memorial. Burpees on one side, burpees on the other.
Mary on the 6. Mosey down to Sawmill Point to the Riverwalk. Stop at the first opening. The river is beautiful and glassy. We remind them of Alfred Waddell’s remarks in his declaration, “we will choke the mouth of the Cape Fear River with black bodies.” Use this mosey back to the AO to reflect on those words.
We made it back to the AO a minute late. As the Q, I was proud to see the pax holding squat while I was retrieving my phone for Name-o-Rama. The Q was pleased to know so many pax have been researching the events, even buying one of the books and / or the video. Its important we remember the past, so we don’t repeat it. The lesson goes a little further, the media was used to divide us … let’s not let that happen again.
It was an honor and a privilege.
